"I have a question, Madiza," I said. "Why didn't you use this to escape before, if you knew about it?"
"Um, hellooo?" she asked, holding up her wrists and rattling her chains.
"Oh. Yeah. Right." 'That should have been obvious,' I thought. The chains were affixed to the wall, and looked pretty tough. So Madiza probably couldn't have gotten free if she tried.
"Well, let's not waste time," said Lucy. "Let's get out of here! The vice president and his men will be down here any second!"
"But what about Madiza?" asked Cara. I was surprised that she cared. She looked over at Ben.
"Don't worry about me, my pretty," sang Madiza. "I'm completely mad. They won't hurt me." She began rocking back and forth, and singing, "I hear nothing, I see nothing, I know nothing, not at all. Hee hee!"
"Actually, Gwilliam will be so mad, he will probably kill you," said Lucy softly. Not even these words seemed to faze her. She only cackled softly.
Then Ben tapped me on the shoulder. He had written more on his paper. Cara and Lucy read over my shoulders.
"I don't care what you do, but I'm not leaving Madiza. She may be crazy, but she's my friend. I don't want to abandon her."
"You won't have to," said Cara. All of us looked at her questioningly. She rummaged around in her pocket, and suddenly pulled out what looked like a small knife.
"I found this lock pick a couple of days ago, but never thought I'd have any need for it." With that, Cara walked over and began freeing Madiza.
We didn't have anything to take with us, so all we needed to do was go down the tunnel, pull the rock back in place so we wouldn't be followed, and then we were free. The only question was, WHERE were we?
