Freegans part 43

Lucy
Madiza and Ben looked very sweet, snuggled up together like that. He couldn't use his voice to say 'ssh, ssh', so he was softly hissing through his teeth. It was all very cute to watch. So why did I have bile rising in my throat, and feel churning in my stomach? I turned away, only to see Cara and Matt smirking at me, and looking as though they were trying not to laugh.
"Shut up!" I snapped.
"What?" asked Cara, her green eyes going wide and innocent. I just glared, and looked for somewhere else to look. My options were becoming smaller by the second. From behind me I heard small explosions of giggles.

It was a relief to me when Kestrel announced that it was times to go. We got up, and began to quickly pack our things. I tried to carry as much as possible, but didn't do very well, I'm afraid. Most of it had to be taken from me, and distributed among the others. But I didn't mind much. I was used to being the weakling. The tall woman, Max, opened the secret door, and we slipped out. To my dismay, I found myself walking near Madiza, who was mumbling and humming to herself, perfectly happy again. I tried to ignore her, instead focusing on the sides of the tunnel, or my friends, or anything else.

Suddenly, Madiza looked right at me and said, out of the blue, "I've been considering words that begin with the letter J. Jealousy. Jaundice. Jack-in-the-box. Juvenile."
"What's that supposed to mean?!" I demanded, stung by the first word.
"Oh, nothing, nothing at all," she replied lightly, looking up at the ceiling as if there were something interesting there. "Just-beware of the green-eyed monster. Oh, and you can't lose what you never had."
Then she went back to her demented mutterings. I felt flustered and angry. Had she just given me a threat? My wonderings were interrupted-by an attack suddenly made on our small group.

Freegans part 18

Lucy

After everyone had gotten something to eat, we headed off again, and didn't stop until I collapsed. To be honest, I'm not much of an athlete even at my best, and all of this running around was starting to take its toll on me. I couldn't go on another step, which meant that the others couldn't either. We just settled down in the pipe. I could tell Cara wanted to go on, but out of concern for me, she decided we needed to take a rest. Everyone sat really close. Nobody wanted to be in a position where they could get killed if we were found.

To my delight, Ben came and sat down by me. I knew it was pointless to notice, but he was honestly very cute. I especially thought his blue eyes, though out of place in his Indian features, were beautiful. I wanted to say something to him, but when I tried, nothing came to mind. Not wanting to embarrass myself, I finally decided to just stay quiet. Instead, I looked at the others, the walls, anywhere but at him.

Cara and Matt were over in a corner talking, and Madiza was rocking back and forth, chattering to herself. It was during this scene that I dropped off to sleep.
